Diamonds have been an integral part of Indian culture for centuries. India has a rich history of diamond mining and trading, and it is home to some of the world’s most famous diamonds. At The Nagi Jewellers, we offer a wide range of diamond jewellery to suit every style and budget.
The history of diamond jewellery in India dates back to ancient times. Diamonds were first discovered in India over 2,000 years ago, and they quickly became a symbol of wealth and status. The country was the only source of diamonds until the 18th century when diamonds were discovered in Brazil. The diamonds found in India were alluvial, which means they were extracted as natural crystals rather than mined. These early diamonds were found in the soft sands and gravels of riverbeds in what are present-day cities of Penner, Krishna, and Godavari in Southern India.
Diamonds were highly valued in ancient India and were used for a variety of purposes. They were used as talismans to ward off evil, to provide protection in battle, and of course, worn as gorgeous embellishments in 22k gold Indian jewellery. The importance of diamonds in ancient Indian society was highly sophisticated. To be a “Mandalin,” or diamond expert, was considered a prestigious and esteemed profession.
The Garuda Purana, a Hindu religious scripture, is considered to be the first reference for ancient Indian gemology. In the scripture, it states that the owner of a flawless diamond will be blessed with wealth, livestock, good harvests, a wife, and children, and that the diamond will protect the owner from both fear and sorcery.
Indian diamonds were famously traded in the Middle East, Europe, and other parts of the world. Greek visitors to ancient India marveled at the elaborate Indian jewellery of the time. A Portuguese chronicler, Paes, wrote of the ancient Vijayanagar empire where he was dazzled by the jewellery worn.
Today, India is one of the largest producers of diamond jewellery in the world. The country has a long-standing tradition of using diamonds in jewellery, and it is home to some of the world’s most famous diamonds. The Kohinoor diamond, which is the most expensive diamond known to date, was found in India. The country has the largest diamond polishing industry in the world, providing 11 out of every 12 processed diamonds for jewellery found on earth.
Indian diamond jewellery is as old as the Indian civilization itself. Many ancient styles for crafting and arranging Indian diamond jewellery are still extremely popular today. For example, the art of Kundan jewellery is nearly 2,500 years old and is said to have originated in the royal courts of Rajasthan and Gujarat. With this style of Indian jewellery, delicate pieces of 22K Indian gold are used in bangles, necklaces, earrings, and other types of jewellery to position the diamonds or other stones.
